SundanceTV to Co-Produce New Scripted Original Mini-Series One Child

Deal for Original Mini-Series Through BBC Worldwide North America

New York, NY – SundanceTV announced today it will co-produce a new original scripted mini-series, “One Child.”  The four-hour series penned by Guy Hibbert (Complicit, Five Minutes of Heaven) and starring Katie Leung (Harry Potter) begins production in May in London and Taiwan and will air in late 2014. “One Child” crosses the world as a Chinese-born young woman adopted by British parents must struggle with who she really is in order to decide where her loyalty lies.

SundanceTV President, Sarah Barnett, commented: “One Child is a deeply affecting work that delves into the heart of a human struggle.  It tells the story of an ordinary young woman who is plunged into a situation that challenges her to her core.” Barnett continued, “This new mini series will take viewers on a very immersive journey across borders, and we’re excited to add it to our 2014 scripted drama slate, accompanying ‘The Red Road,’ ‘Rectify’ and ‘The Honorable Woman.’”

One Child is BBC Worldwide’s third consecutive high-profile deal with SundanceTV.  Our previous collaborations, including the critically-acclaimed and multi-award nominated, ‘Top of the Lake’ and the highly anticipated upcoming ‘The Honorable Woman’ starring Maggie Gyllenhaal, demonstrate the strength of this cross Atlantic partnership.” commented Matt Forde, EVP Sales and Co-productions, BBC Worldwide North America.   “SundanceTV is the perfect platform to deliver this complex and moving story to American audiences.”

Mei (Leung), a first-born Chinese girl adopted by English parents, gets called back to Guangzhou when her birth mother desperately seeks her assistance in saving her son.   How far will Mei go to help the woman who gave her away and the brother she’s never met?  This drama takes a new look at what it means to be family.

One Child will be produced by Hilary Salmon for BBC Productions. The deal was brokered by Lilla Hurst, Joint Managing Director, Drive in conjunction with Jemma Adkins, SVP, Sales and Co-productions for BBC Worldwide North America. The project is a BBC Drama production for BBC Two and is co-produced with SundanceTV.

News of this project follows the success of recent SundanceTV / BBCW co-production “Top of the Lake” which received two Golden Globe nominations and one win for Best Performance by an Actress in a Mini-Series for Elisabeth Moss; eight Emmy nominations including one win; and two SAG nominations. SundanceTV and BBC’s next co-production, “The Honorable Woman” will premiere in the second half of 2014.  Today’s news also comes on the heels of the recent rebrand of Sundance Channel to SundanceTV.
