Bake Off Argentina Cooks Up Ratings Success For Local TV Broadcaster Telefe

Turner Latin America production Bake Off Argentina, El Gran Pastelero, is the first Spanish-language version of the hit Love Productions reality format. Licensed by the distribution arm of BBC Studios, the show won over local audiences week after week and culminated with tremendous success for Telefe garnering an average rating of 13.8% and viewer share of 54.5% (1)

Miami, FL The first Spanish-language adaptation of the hugely popular Love Productions format produced in Argentina by Turner Latin America, the leading multiplatform media and content company in the region, and licensed by the distribution arm of BBC Studios has charmed Argentine households and lead audiences with each transmission on Telefe, the country’s largest free-to-air TV broadcaster.

Following its premiere on April 8 with an average rating of 12.8 (2), the Argentine version of the world-famous British baking battle reality show soon positioned itself as the most-watched show on local free-to-air TV and increased its ratings by over 35%. Over the 11 weeks that the show aired, the program grew in popularity as Argentine families followed their favorite contestants, culminating in the final installment on June 24, which netted an average rating of 17.1, with peaks as high as 19.9, and a 70.3% audience share (3). “Bake Off Argentina” was a leading trending topic on social media, along with Gastón Salas and Hernán Lambertucci (the two finalists) and Patagonia (the region of Argentina where the winner, Gastón, is from).

“Bake Off Argentina, El Gran Pastelero underscores our commitment to Argentina while emphasizing our strategy to bring the best of British content and formats to every corner of Latin America,” said David Hanono, SVP of Sales and Digital, BBC Studios Latin America/U.S. Hispanic. “We are confident that our partnership with Turner Productions to bring the local version of one of the most successful formats on Telefe, will pave the way to bringing The Great Bake Off to new markets in South America.”

“From the first day it aired, audiences embraced the concept of the show and followed it closely every Sunday. The ratings and audience share for each installment confirmed our intuition when we decided to produce the first Spanish-language version of the format with the local flavor — that The Great Bake Off’s global success would translate into a hit for Argentine audiences as well,” said Richi Pichetto, VP Content Production at Turner Latin America.  “We are currently working on a new local adaptation for the Chilean market that audiences will soon be able to enjoy on Chilevisión.”

Like other international adaptations of the Love Productions format, Bake Off Argentina, El Gran Pastelero featured 12 aspiring bakers of all ages. The series had eleven 75-minute episodes and was hosted by model and presenter Paula Cháves featuring a panel of renowned judges including chef Christophe Krywonis and pastry chefs Pamela Villar and Damian Betular.

Since premiering in the United Kingdom on BBC in 2010, The Great Bake Off  has become a television phenomenon around the world. The Love Productions format has already been licensed by BBC Studios to 29 countries, including  Australia, France, Poland, South Africa Thailand and most recently Greece.

“The first adaptation in Latin America – Bake Off Brasil – Mão na Massa – was launched in Brazil in 2014 and immediately became one of the most popular shows in the country.  Now in its third season, it has increased viewership significantly for SBT on free-to-air TV and Discovery Home & Health on Pay TV, gaining audience year after year on both networks,” Hanono said.

The Great Bake Off is a creation of Love Productions and airs on Channel 4 in the U.K. The show and its format are distributed by BBC Studios.
