Vernon Chu

As General Counsel, BBC Studios – Americas, Vernon G. Chu leads on all legal matters affecting BBC Studios in the U.S., Canada, and Latin America. He oversees policy and compliance issues in the region, including fair-trading, editorial standards, advertising guidelines, trademark, and copyright policy. He is responsible for the legal aspects of multiple business divisions, including linear and digital program sales, co-productions, home entertainment, and licensing, and is involved with oversight of joint ventures in the region, including SVOD service BritBox and cable channels BBC America, BBC Canada, and BBC Earth. He also works closely with BBC Studios’ LA Production unit.

A 25-year veteran of BBC Studios, Chu first joined as Director of Business and Legal Affairs, where he helped launch BBC AMERICA and worked on the initial seasons of Dancing with the Stars on ABC.

Previously, Chu spent six years as an associate with Kay Collyer & Boose, and at the start of his career was a corporate associate at Spengler, Carlson, Gubar, Brodsky & Frischling in New York City.

Chu was recognized as Counsel of the Year in 2007 by the Association of Media and Entertainment Counsel, and was Co-Chair of the Film and Television Committee of the American Bar Association’s Forum on the Entertainment and Sports Industries, and a member of the Executive Committee and Secretary for the British Academy of Film and Television Arts for many years. He is also active in the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association and the Asian American Bar Association of New York.

Chu holds a degree in accounting and economics from the Wharton School in Philadelphia and an MBA and law degree from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York.
